Maureen O'hara..........................From her first appearances on the stage and screen Maureen O'Hara (b. 1920) was a star with her beautiful beauty and radiant red hair and impassioned characters of passionate characters. She charmed the audience with her effortless confidence and strong presence, whether she was being saved from the Gallows (The Hunchback on Notre Dame in 1939) or falling in love with Walter Pidgeon under a coal blackened sky at the beginning of 1941 (How Green Was My Valley) and learning to believe in miracles with Natalie Wood (Miracle on 34th Street in 1947). Maureen O'Hara: The Queen of Technicolor is one of the few book-length biographies of this screen icon. Aubrey Malone uses new information taken from Irish Film Institute notes on films and productions as well as from historical newspaper, magazine and fan publications to follow the actress as she grows up in Dublin and reaches the peak of her fame in Hollywood. Malone examines her friendship of John Wayne, and the connection she enjoyed with John Ford. He also examines the debate regarding whether or not O'Hara was an antifeminist. While she was an iconic figure of film's golden era, her tendency to keep her privacy private and the habit of making public statements in opposition to her personal values have made her an enigma. This new biography gives an opportunity to look at the woman who was behind her iconic image of the past.
